Sickly and in secret, the Llobregat dies in Barcelona. Unlike other major cities which live beside and take pride in the river that has marked their history, in Barcelona there seems to be no river, when in fact there are two. The grimy waters of the Llobregat and the Besós run into the Mediterranean on the fringes of the city, hidden among industrial estates and places that could be called non-places.
If going upstream means seeking out the sources and symbolises the search for truth or access to the unconscious, going down the Llobregat is a way of exploring one of the pillars of modern, industrial Catalan history. Despite the disappearance of the textile industry that clothed the city in riches, this river today is still a source of constant transformation.
According to Heraclitus, there is nothing permanent except change and we do not step twice into the same river. Let us, then, go down these rivers.
